Detalles de producto
- A compelling history of the contradictory, often militaristic, role of Zen Buddhism, this book meticulously documents the close and previously unknown support of a supposedly peaceful religion for Japanese militarism throughout World War II. Drawing on the writings and speeches of leading Zen masters and scholars, Brian Victoria shows that Zen served as a powerful foundation for the fanatical and suicidal spirit displayed by the imperial Japanese military. At the same time, the author recounts the dramatic and tragic stories of the handful of Buddhist organizations and individuals that dared to oppose Japan's march to war. He follows this history up through recent apologies by several Zen sects for their support of the war and the way support for militarism was transformed into 'corporate Zen' in postwar Japan. The second edition includes a substantive new chapter on the roots of Zen militarism and an epilogue that explores the potentially volatile mix of religion and war. With the increasing interest in Buddhism in the West, this book is as timely as it is certain to be controversial.

Spirituality Editorial Review
The book "Zen at War 2nd Edition" by Brian Victoria provides a detailed examination of the alliance between Zen Buddhist leadership and the Japanese militarists during World War II. The author sheds light on the role of Zen and other Japanese Buddhist sects during the war, discussing the accommodation of militarism by the Buddhist establishment in Japan. The book is well-researched and offers a critical perspective on Japanese militarism. It challenges the notion of Zen Buddhism as gentle and non-violent, revealing the dark side of Zen leaders' behavior during the war. The author's honesty and careful examination of the issue and individuals involved make for an enlightening read. This book serves as a reminder for practitioners of Buddhism to Constantly evaluate their own practice. Overall, the reception of "Zen at War 2nd Edition" has been positive. Readers appreciate the painstaking research and readable style of the book, commending the author for his courage in exposing the dark side of Japanese Zen. It is seen as a wake-up call for those who naively idolize famous Japanese Zen teachers as "enlightened" masters. The book serves as an object lesson for anyone interested in Buddhism, shining a light on the perverted use of Buddhist teachings for militaristic purposes. The author's efforts are seen as heroic, and the book is highly recommended to those wanting to learn more about the role of Zen Buddhism during World War II.
